The company Jorge and I co-founded, Abacum, just wrapped up an incredible Q3. I want to share my 3 biggest wins and learnings from the past 3 months: Wins: 1. We’ve more than 2x our growth velocity QoQ in Q2 and also Q3. The product is dope. We’re now operating on a whole new level. 2. We signed impressive logos like Strava, Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd, Cortex, Ursa Major, Mangopay, join.com, and many more. These highly sophisticated finance teams deal with high business complexity in a fast-moving market. I cannot be prouder that Abacum has become their long-term partner. 3. We’ve continued heavily investing in our product, shipping a number of AI-driven features like AI Forecasting and AI Classifiers. We've leveraged ML in the product since our MVP years ago. Now, AI is deeply embedded in what we’re building, and we’re excited about where it’s headed. Learnings: 1. We’ve learned that missing small details can lead to underperformance. Going forward, we’re focusing on tightening up execution at every level and obsessing over details. 2. This year, we’ve had a good number of key teammates become parents. With so many key people on leave it’s been all hands on deck. Basically none of us were sleeping during this time. Not the new parents and not the rest of us. My co-founder Jorge and I have 3 children each. We are proud to see our teammates grow their families and have fulfilling lives amidst our relentless commitment to better serve our customers. 3. We’re getting serious about infosec and legal measures, making sure that as we grow, our security is top-tier and ready to scale with us. This quarter has been a wild ride, I'm thrilled about what's coming next!

💡 Lead your remote/distributed teams with empathy (my own experience): Working with remote or distributed teams can be a challenge for Engineering Managers. Keeping your teammates aligned across different time zones, countries, or cultures requires excellent organization, best practices, and a lot of emotional intelligence. One thing I’ve learned is that beyond technology and processes, the human factor is probably the most important to manage. You’ll need to resolve conflicts, build trust, and boost productivity, but you won’t be able to do it without empathy—I can assure you of that. A few quick practices that have helped me are: ▶ Clear goals: Ensure everyone is following the same direction. Keep the goals visible to the team (e.g., JIRA board, Slack, etc.), and provide friendly reminders if you have stand-ups with them. ▶ Good communication and cadence: Schedule regular check-ins. Make sure the team feels heard. ▶ Flexibility and cultural differences: Be flexible with schedules and learn how to communicate with different cultures, as not everyone works in the same way. Practice deep listening with your teammates and set clear expectations. Learn what is "normal" for them and find a balance to create a good fit within your team. ▶ Foster a safe environment: Create open discussion spaces for the whole team, plus 1:1 meetings. A meeting I’ve been using a lot, which often gets overlooked, is the retrospective. But for your team to participate and share their true feelings, they need to feel comfortable. 💡 [TIP] How do you handle unexpected news as an Engineering Manager? In day-to-day work, you and your teams sometimes receive unexpected news that can shake the team's motivation. As Engineering Manager, how are you handling this? Here is how I’m approaching these situations in case it helps you reinforce your own mindset: 1️⃣ Understand this reality: companies evolve. One day, your best teammate might leave. Another day, you might decide to move on. And on another day, the company might make changes. That’s just how it works. 2️⃣ So, I ask myself this question: What opportunities can my teams and I find in this situation? 3️⃣ If you're following step number 3️⃣ , I can ensure you that you'll find at least 1 opportunity to grow. 4️⃣ Communicate this to your teams and remain open to deeply listening to their thoughts and proposals. 5️⃣ Create your own plan to seize the opportunity. The ideal world doesn’t exist. And perhaps it doesn’t because “ideal” means something different to everyone. 🙂 This may sound obvious, but when we receive unexpected news, we tend to ask ourselves why and try to understand it, investing energy in something that probably isn’t up to us. 💡 Continuous Feedback is key to Building Stronger Teams: As an Engineering Manager, I’ve learned that one of the most powerful tools we have it’s feedback. I think feedback fosters team growth and engagement. I'm not speaking only about annual reviews. It’s about making feedback a part of your day-to-day management style. What have I discovered over the years? 🔄 Real-time feedback builds trust: sharing it openly and regularly, it creates a culture of transparency opening the door for honest conversations. 🌱 Not only focussed in performance: empower growth in your teams, if they're growing, the performance and results will do it consequently. 📈 Small corrections prevent big issues or problems, giving us time to adjust our team's direction. 💬 Two-way street: be open to receiving feedback, not only from your manager but also from your team. I regularly ask my team, "What can I do better?". Meet our team! Here’s Nosh’s co-founder and CTO Felipe Lino. 🔬 🔸 What is your day-to-day like as CTO? I oversee R&D and everything related to product and tech development. I guide our answers to questions like: - How do we upscale? - What is the best tech stack to use? - Which partners will help us move our concepts forward? - Which projects do we prioritise? 🔸 You have spoken about the simplicity of Nosh’s solution. What do you mean by this? My understanding after talking to experts is that in the past, VCs replicated a pharma mentality in other industries. The first thing they would ask about is IP—having your own strain, process, or technology that can be easily defended. So most food startups begin with a fancy university technology that they try to commercialize. We did the opposite: we created Nosh with the problem in mind, and then targeted the best technology to tackle it. The typical approach, developing a novel technology from scratch, requires heavy investment. Some of the biggest companies are only able to sell their solutions to Michelin-star restaurants and macaron producers because those are the only businesses that can take on that kind of cost. To change the food industry’s reliance on animal products, we need to bring something that is scalable. Investors are understanding this now. Fancy tech does not really move the needle when it comes to scalability and cost. We consciously chose a technology that is scalable and cost-efficient. Our  unique approach is to retrofit breweries and provide structure with minimal processing. These solutions positively impact our CAPEX and OPEX, but require smart people to make happen. It might look simple, but there’s so much happening under the hood. 🔸  Where have you lived and where do you live now? I was born and raised in a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. I lived in the city of São Paulo for about 10 years during my university studies. After my Masters, I moved to the south of Brazil to work as a researcher at Novozymes (now Novonesis) and stayed there for 4 years. Then I moved to Copenhagen for my PhD and postdoc, and then to Leuven, in Belgium, where I worked as a global R&D manager at AB InBev. When I decided to found Nosh with Tim, I moved to Berlin in 2022.

Remote team or not? I myself have been working for a few years but only now at Techstars I actually go to an office every day. I had an awesome time working remote and I honestly got a lot done, specially in terms of software development. More than I could have in an office in my opinion. And if you take the opportunity to travel, you can also get to know many countries and cultures at the same time. It’s epic. Now I am in an office. Everyday. Sitting close side by side with my cofounder and many other amazing people. Sitting there, in the office, I read an article about somebody complaining that companies want you to come back to the office. I was always pro-remote but I started thinking about it. The amount of clearance and alignment when working in person together or being able to just walk over to another persons desk to ask a question is very strong compared to online meetings or chat messages. Or a motivating smile by Brian Daly as he walks past your desk instead of an emoji reaction. On the other side deep concentrated work, like actual software development is very hard for me in the office environment. Being able to work remote is a luxury not a must have. It can help, it can also be harmful. If your company decides to go office only, don’t blame them for it. What do you think? #remote #office
